Climate Change + Public Art

Earlier this year The Waterfront BIA and Waterfront Toronto announced their 2022 Artist in Residence: Lisa Hirmer. Lisa’s residency will focus on the importance of climate change throughout the year. Hirmer’s work critically examines the way that human relationships interact with their surrounding ecologies and asks broader questions about life in this moment of climate emergency.

“There is something very special about the way the city’s urban fabric tangles with the more-than-human world along the waterfront. There is incredible creative potential for a sustained engagement with the unique hybrid ecologies of the city’s watery edge. The chance to create meaningful experiences with this special place is really exciting.”  – Lisa Hirmer

We look forward to seeing some of the amazing work Lisa does this year to highlight the importance of climate change in the waterfront community! Keep an eye on our social media for more exciting things to come 👀

PortsToronto Seabin Program

The Waterfront BIA, with funding from the City of Toronto’s BIA Innovation Grant, is a proud partner of the PortsToronto Seabin Program. The Toronto waterfront is important and we want to keep it clean and plastic free!

In an effort to combat and study single-use plastics and microplastics in waterways, PortsToronto launched its award-winning Seabin Program in 2019 at the Outer Harbour Marina and at Pier 6 on Toronto’s waterfront. Project partners, the University of Toronto Trash Team, count and characterize the materials captured by PortsToronto Seabins in order to further understand the origination of floating plastic and litter in the Toronto Harbour, and to inform solutions to prevent these materials from entering Lake Ontario in the first place.
