The Waterfront East LRT

The Waterfront East LRT route will connect existing and new neighbourhoods, destinations, and jobs on the water’s edge to the broader city and region.

The growth of the eastern waterfront and the Port Lands means that seamless transit connectivity is vital to make homes, jobs, and attractions for visitors accessible.

The Waterfront BIA will be monitoring design and construction plans and will be active in advocating for mitigation plans to ensure businesses can stay active and thrive through construction periods.

Funding the Waterfront East LRT

As of March 30, 2026, the Waterfront East LRT has received support and funding through a three-way partnership between municipal, provincial, and federal governments.

In 2023, more than 50 organizations and leaders shared a joint statement with Mayor Chow, Premier Ford and former Prime Minister Trudeau on the urgency of funding and building Waterfront East Light Rail Transit (LRT).

"George Brown College built a state-of-the-art campus on the waterfront because we recognize its importance in building Toronto’s economic prosperity. Every day, over 5,000 students and 1,000 staff travel to our Waterfront Campus. The Waterfront East LRT is critical to helping our community access world-class education and in helping our students build the careers our workforce needs."

Toronto leaders signing the joint statement represent arts and culture organizations, business and industry, educational institutes, resident groups, waterfront stakeholders and public leaders
